Mother Bear Fells Dead Tree to Forage for Insects

Interesting sequence of a Black Bear mother with cubs foraging for insects in a dead aspen tree.  Click on the thumbnails to view the videos.

In this clip, she is digging near the bottom of the dead tree for insects but more likely, she is creating a weak point to enable her to break the tree off, as I have witnessed another bear doing this.

In this clip, she jumps up on the tree and shakes it to break it off.  When it breaks, she jumps down and grabs it to control the fall, possibly so it doesn't fall on one of her cubs. Note that one of the cubs is hightailing it out to the left as the tree falls.

Once the tree has fallen,  notice how easily she pulls the 150-200 kilogram trunk of the fallen tree away from the stump with incredible ease. Unfortunately, she pulled the tree out of view before tearing it apart.

Mother Bear Nursing Her Cubs

Cinnamon mother bear, we call Tripawed, nursing her four 7-month old cubs. The amazing thing here is that I was able to capture the purring sound the cubs make while feeding.
